The Department of Pediatrics of the newly established Government Medical College Baramulla has been entrusted with the job of providing medical care and health guidance to the pediatric population of Kashmir Valley in general and that of Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara districts in particular. This is in addition to imparting medical training to the undergraduate students and health care workers involved in providing primary health care services to the population at grassroot levels. The department has taken up the reins of this responsibility from the erstwhile District Hospital Baramulla whose existing infrastructure was incorporated into the newly designated Associated Hospital of the Government Medical College Baramulla in 2018 and since then the facilities are being continuously upgraded. The Department of Pediatrics boasts of a full-time faculty of senior consultants including One Professor, One Associate Professor, Three Assistant Professors, One Child Psychologist and two Pediatric Specialists. Besides there are 3 Senior Residents, 6 Junior Residents, 8 Medical Officers and more than 20 Nurses in addition to an indispensable workforce of counsellors and social workers besides technical, ministerial and janitorial staff who work as a cohesive unit in providing health care to the patients. The department provides essential and emergency newborn care, immunizations, general pediatric inpatient and outpatient care and guidance and counselling services to the whole pediatric population of Northern Kashmir with a watershed area extending from Budgam to Uri and Gulmarg to Kupwara. The department has a fully functional 10 bedded SpecialNewborn Care Unit (SNCU) for infants upto 1 month of age that is in the process of being upgraded to a Level 3 Neonatal ICU. Associated with the SNCU is an ancillary section of Family Participatory Care (FPC) that aims at family involvement in the care of newborns admitted in the SNCU and provides counselling and training to the mothers of newborn babies about Breastfeeding, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and home care of babies using audio-visual aids. The Emergency area includes a fully equipped Emergency Triage, Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) area where 24x7 emergency services are provided. The Pediatric Ward has 24 General Beds out of which 6 beds are dedicated as High Dependency Unit (HDU) where care is provided to children in need of more intensive monitoring. A fully equipped Level 2 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is on the cards and will be functional shortly as the necessary infrastructure is being put into place. The Outpatient area has a huge rush of patients with a daily OPD of more than 250 patients who are provided with specialist advice and treatment under supervision of senior consultants. There is a separate OPD for child Psychology catering to the ever-increasing psychiatric disease burden in the pediatric age group. Sophisticated tests including IQ Assessment are routinely done in the OPD that fetches referrals from all over Kashmir Valley. TheNutritional Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) aided by the National Health Mission (NHM) provided nutritional rehabilitation to children suffering from Protein Energy Malnutrition including Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) identified through outreach camps and surveys conducted by the RBSK teams working under the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) of NHM that has a nodal centre in the Hospital. The DEIC has a patient referral base from all Medical blocks of Baramulla District. Registered patients are provided with consultations and free of cost medicines for diseases that include Seizure Disorder, Anaemia, Rickets and other Communicable and Non Communicable Chronic Diseases. On the academic front the department in addition to providing Medical Education to the undergraduate Students also provides trainings in various aspects of newborn and pediatric care to grassroot level workers from the community under aegis of NHM from time to time. The department will also be admitting students for post graduate courses of DNB and DCH in the broad speciality of Pediatrics from the next academic year. This will aid in furthering the research in pediatrics besides improving the health care delivery to the general population. The faculty of the department has already been recognised for acting as PG Guides for the said courses.
